Singapore – May 29, 2017 – The work of Korean artist, Minjung Kim, is being showcased in the exhibition, “Oneness,” now through July 30, 2017 at Aloft. The luxury art house is one of five located in Hermes stores worldwide. Aloft at Hermes is located at 541 Orchard Road, Liat Towers in Singapore. The exhibit is open daily from 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and admission is free.

Kim Minjung is a mixed media artist born in Gwangju, South Korea. She began painting at an early age and studied at the famed Hongik University in Seoul before moving to Italy. She’s a trained calligrapher, but it’s in the world of paint that she found her true calling. The artist combines Western collage methods with colors and techniques of East Asia to reflect her own personal history, journey and its changing narrative.

Her work is characterized by dynamic strokes performed with Indian ink on Korean hanji paper. Her work is drawn in the style of Chinese landscape masters from the Song and Yuan dynasties, combined with her Taoist belief system and Zen philosophy.

Kim’s paintings have been said to mirror the classic literati paintings, representing the ideal form of the scholar-painter. The literati painting, or wenrenhua, emphasizes the artist’s personal expression, brings order out of chaos, and satisfies the senses rather than simply replicating images of objects already in existence.

Her technique requires the artist to master a unity of mind and spirit to achieve harmony with the natural world. The exhibition “Oneness” at Aloft at Hermes brings together for the first time a collection of paintings by Kim that embodies that technique and perfectly reflects the Foundation d’enterprise Hermes’ 2017 theme of “Reflection.”

One of the paintings on display, “Red Mountain,” was inspired by the sound of crashing waves against a rugged coastline that she encountered during a stay in Southern Italy. The painting represents a visualization of the different layers of sound, a cacophony of both natural and human, that she transformed into soothing order.

The collection of works by Minjung Kim on display at Aloft at Hermes brings the majesty of mountains to Singapore in a new and entirely different way through the artist’s distinctive style and viewpoint. The exhibition will be on display at the boutique arthouse now through July 30, 2017, providing art enthusiasts with the opportunity to experience Kim’s unique vision.
