Making the most of each glass

Wine is a living thing. One that changes over time (in case of the best ones – gets better), and is affected by the environment that it’s served in. The temperature, the humidity, the ambiance – they all influence our perception of what’s in the glass…and so does the glass itself. Need proof? At Riedel Wine bar and Cellar, you’ll find more than 200.

Riedel – the producer of world class glassware – is known for adding one more position to the list of factors affecting our perception of a particular wine – the glass that it’s served in. It was Claus J. Riedel, 9th-generation of his clan, who discovered the intrinsic link between the shape of a glass and its effect on the aroma and taste of alcoholic beverages. With that discovery, he pioneered a new kind of wine pairing – not with food, but with glass.

The idea is to take it further than the traditional “smaller glass for white, bigger glass for red and a flute for sparkling”; Riedel designs glasses for specific grape varieties, wine regions and styles. “Does it work?” you ask? Sorry, wrong question. If you’re not in the habit of serving wine in a tea mug, you should have no reason to doubt, that it does. The question is “where to try it?”. At Riedel Wine bar and Cellar is the answer.

Located at Bangkok’s Gaysorn Village, this innovative wine bar offers an ideal setting for elevating your wine experience. Tranquil ambiance, dimmed lights and impeccable service will help unwind and focus on what matters here the most – your glass and what’s in it.  And what will be in it, is one of more than 200 labels on the bar’s menu. Featuring wines from small, boutique producers as well as some of the world’s most famous bottles, curated for rarity as well as variety, with an emphasis on the artisanal and authentic, it’s a wine list to frame and hang on the wall.

But just as wine lists are not to be hung walls, wines are not to be kept indefinitely in cellars; they are meant to be tasted, enjoyed and shared. And at Riedel Wine bar and Cellar, you can do just that, without popping a whole bottle open. Thanks to the bar’s state of the art WineEmotion, a revolutionary wine dispensing system designed to preserve wines, 40 labels are offered by the glass at any given time. All you need to do is pick a wine presented in a cooler, slip in your personal WineEmotion top up card in the machine’s slot, and out comes the wine – served at a perfect temperature, and naturally, in a perfect glass.

It might seem a tad futuristic, adding to the intimidation many of us feel, when faced with a large selection of wine labels, but worry not – Riedel’s team of in-house sommeliers is always there, ready to offer their expertise. And in any case, you don’t visit Riedel Wine bar and Cellar to pass a wine knowledge test, but to unwind, enjoy a great selection delish food on the menu and make the best of the evening. With a glass of great wine in hand, you’ll be on the right track.
